Nantucket Basket Needle Holder

One of my forever favorite summer travel destinations is Nantucket. The charming whaling cottages, the sloping cobblestone streets, picturesque lighthouses, and some of the most beautiful beaches our country has to offer. I’ve been coming to Nantucket with family and friends since 2003, and my love for this beautiful, little island inspired my latest exclusive partnership with Caitlin Parsons, the founder of Nantucket Bracelets.

When settlers arrived to Nantucket in the 1650's, natives taught them how to make practical baskets from local woods of the island.  What makes Nantucket truly so unique, is its whaling history. Between the late 18th and early 19th centuries, this tiny island was the whaling capital of the world and one of the wealthiest communities in America. During these times, when ships sailed to the Pacific to hunt whales, sailors brought back a material called rattan that has since become the material used to make traditional “Lightship Baskets.” In the 1850's, men aboard Lightships stationed off the coast would weave these baskets.

Caitlin grew up on Nantucket, and her family has been weaving baskets for multiple generations. Her love and appreciation for the island and this tradition led her to join her family business and start Nantucket Bracelets in 2013.

Greystone is excited to launch our Nantucket Basket Needle Holder finished with a beautiful blue liberty print. It’s not only a useful tool for the needlepoint enthusiast, but also a beautiful decorative touch for your favorite needlepoint corner. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do! Shop it here!
